The ECDC advice for the washing of homemade masks as of the 8th of April was simply to machine wash at 60 degrees. The ECDC went on to say that Community mask groups may further develop this reccommendation.
MACHINE WASH TECHNIQUE:
Include mask with other items on 60 degree wash cycle.
Remove mask from bag inside drum of machine.
Wash bag and set aside to dry.
Wash hands.
After cycle ends, with clean hands seperate from bulk of wash and dry individually.
Once dry with clean hands bag masks for future use.
PAPER BAG OVEN TECHNIQUE:
Place paper bags with contaminated masks inside oven for 40 mins at 70 degrees.
Wash hands.
Don’t open paper bag until masks need to be used again.
Reusable homemade face masks are only effective when sterilised correctly, otherwise they could introduce a risk.
Wearing a homemade mask can help reduce the spread of the virus in conjuntion with hand washing and social distancing.
